The senator representing southern senatorial district of Cross River State in the National Assembly, Senator Gershom Bassey has said that he has lost confidence in the electoral umpire, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), judging from the outcome of the just concluded presidential and National Assembly Elections.
In a chat with the press recently in Calabar, he stressed that he was disappointed by INEC in ability to conduct a credible elections in the country as expected of them even with the introduction of the BVAS.
“I do not have confidence in the results of the elections so far declared by INEC and the reason is very simple”.
He maintained that they passed the electoral law at the National Assembly, stressing that after voting, and the results is announced at the polling unit, electoral law says the results should be uploaded immediately, adding that a situation where results were not uploaded 24 to 48 hours is not acceptable meaning that the electoral law is fatally flawed.
“There was no transparency in the whole process, that is why you see people calling for the cancellation of the elections, so I do not accept the results of the presidential election in any way” he maintained.
He said Atiku losing the presidential bid would definitely affects PDP in the Governorship election coming up soon because everybody’s moral is low. Bassey noted that the party would have been better here in the state in the next election with an Atiku victory
Senator Bassey added that having lost the presidential election, they would sit down and Cary out a post mortem to determine the mistakes they made so that they would be stronger in the next outing”.He also admitted that PDP has been greatly divided but that there has been no sharp division in the party here in the state as people think
Bassey noted that Labour winning the State in the presidential election was a complete psunami that has devastated other parties, but was happy that labour does not have a Governorship candidate in the state, otherwise they would have been in serious trouble
“It is time for we all to go back to the drawing board and see where we did right or wrong”
