The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Cross River State chapter has embarked on indefinite strike action to press for their demands and they have vowed not to return to work until their demands were met
The union has also shutdown all the court premises in the state and this has disrupted the activities of the election petition tribunal whose activities were slated to commence today 3rd of May 2023.
In a release issued on the 2nd of May 2023 signed by the state chairman of Jusun, comrade Enya Etorti, the union pointed out eight reasons why they have resolved to proceed on the indefinite strike action, which includes; Implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary, payment of 66% balance of consolidated judiciary salaries, re-instatement of some of their members whose names were removed from payroll amongst other.
In his interview with journalists at the judiciary headquarters in calabar, the state chairman, comrade Etorti said the union had shown reasonable understanding with the Government of cross River State under the leadership of the outgoing government of Governor Ayade
He maintained that the strike action is long overdue and vowed not to call off untill the government address all the issues as stated in the bulletin.He said these issues had been there since 2015 and the government of Prof. Ben Ayade just refuse to address
In his words; “since last year we had given the government 21days ultimatum, we have given them 14days, and then 7days, we also went on a 5 day warning strike, with all these, the government did not say anything before we finally decided to embark on this strike”.
“We are shutting down judiciary premises across the state, so election petition tribunal can look for another venue for their sittings as we are not going to open the court premises” he added.
But when our reporter contacted the secretary of cross River State election petition tribunal, Akawu D Bambur on how the Jusun strike in the state has affected their inaugural sitting, he promised to communicate to the press on a new date for their inaugural sitting
